Jakarta, 5th December 2024 – Gilang Anugerah Munggaran, SKM, MKM as Lecturer in the Faculty of Public, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, has been accepted to attend the inaugural Monash Arts Academic Writing and Publishing Workshop. The workshop was organized by Monash University and featured four distinguished speakers: Professor Megan Farrelly, Associate Professor Narelle Warren, Dr, Wikke Novalia, and Mr. Hilman Fathoni. The event brought together lecturers, researchers, and students from various institutions, all eager to enhance their academic writing skills and gain insights into international publication processes.
The workshop began with an introduction by the speakers, highlighting the importance of academic writing in building a strong research career. Each session focused on a key element of writing, such as structuring abstracts, responding to peer review feedback, and avoiding common pitfalls in publishing. Interactive group discussions allowed participants to practice their skills, while mentoring sessions offered tailored advice. The workshop closed with a reflection session, where participants shared their key takeaways and aspirations.
The Academic Writing and Publishing Workshop focused on strategies for crafting impactful research papers, navigating peer review processes, and selecting suitable journals for publication. Participants had the opportunity to receive personalized feedback on their draft manuscripts and learn best practices from seasoned scholars. This engaging and educational event was held at Monash University Indonesia. The workshop took place over four days, from December 2 to December 5, 2024, providing ample time for in-depth discussions and interactive sessions.
The goal of the workshop was to empower academics, especially those from Indonesia, to produce high-quality research papers and increase their chances of being published in reputable international journals. This aligns with the broader mission of enhancing global visibility for Indonesian research and fostering academic excellence. The sessions were structured to include lectures, group discussions, and one-on-one mentoring. Draft abstracts were reviewed in peer groups, with detailed feedback provided by lead academics like Associate Professor Warren.

Associate Professor Narelle Warren, a prominent researcher in health sociology, shared her expertise on navigating the complexities of academic publishing. She highlighted the importance of clarity, originality, and ethical writing practices.“In academia, your work represents your voice. Ensuring your paper is concise and impactful is key to reaching wider audiences,†she said.
Her extensive experience in mentoring researchers and reviewing journal submissions made her advice practical and actionable. She also expressed her encouragement for Indonesian academics to contribute more actively to the global research community.
The workshop offered numerous benefits, first Enhanced Writing Skills. Participants learned how to refine their abstracts and manuscripts, ensuring they meet international standards. Second, Increased Confidence. Practical sessions built confidence in navigating the peer review process. Third, Networking Opportunities. The event fostered connections among academics, paving the way for future collaborations. Moreover, the participants has been attending the Herb Feith Research in Indonesia Symposium on 4 December 2024. The last, Clear Roadmap for Success. Step-by-step guidance on selecting journals, addressing reviewers’ feedback, and improving research quality was provided.

The workshop also emphasized the value of persistence in overcoming language barriers and mastering academic English, especially for non-native speakers like myselfâ€.
There is a strong potential for collaboration between the Faculty of Public Health (FKM), Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ) and Monash University Indonesia, particularly with the Faculty of Arts. Such a partnership could foster joint research projects on global and local health issues; Provide opportunities for staff and student exchanges, enriching both institutions; Support FKM UMJ lecturers in achieving international publication goals through workshops and mentoring programs.
